Seriously though, base model is like $600 less than a base model 3 series. Wouldnt most people in the market for a BMW just get a 3 series? I also like the last gen 1 series more.

Presumably single guys M235i, and single girls 228i luxury line.

It's for the "young millennial buyer who has enough money to get one," a segment that car companies think exist.

You're getting more power in the 228i for the same cost as the 320i. The 2 is supposed to drive better than the 3 as well. It also looks better IMO.

The M235i is for those that can't afford a proper M-car and the 228i I haven't a clue. Women? Or those that don't want to pay that extra 600 for a 3-series?

Normally, when discussing markets for smaller cars, I'd say 'Europeans', but we're all buying the 1 Series.

but realistically, were I to go back, I can't say I wouldn't seriously consider the 2. I just don't think its ever going to be a big player. The 3 just looks better to me.

BMW has kinda lost its way in the styling department IMO, but at least they got the 2's proportions right. Besides, the new 3er is the size of an early 7!

May be going after someone like me, I have the e46 330CI (2002, 5MT) and had been maybe thinking on an update- I do like the 2 series and size/proportion wise, its closest to the e46 than to anything else. The lines are graceful but not as good as an e92 Haven't driven it yet. Wondering if I want to upgrade to a 07-10 335is (used) - Can't get new so the 2 series is out of price range.

Aaaaaannd that's where we disagree. But I think we've already had this conversation before. I DO think the M235i is going to be a great used car buy in the near future though, for the people it was actually made for in the first place.

Some people think 4 doors are ugly. I don't know, I just made that up. To be honest, I have no idea.

It's for people who want a smaller, less expensive coupe than the 4 series. I guess it really competes with the Mustang, Camaro, Genesis Coupe

The 2 is for people who want a 1 series sized coupe (thats what it replaces). They sold plenty of those so I expect similar sales.

I have asked this question about a couple of cars on the market. The Porsche Macan is a more extreme example. For me it seems like the ideal alternative to a sports wagon, but the price is more than a bit ridiculous when compared to everything else in the market. Its larger brother is actually cheaper once comparably spec'd out. With the 2 series and the Macan you are not saving anything over their larger siblings and I am not sure you are gaining enough in handling or performance to make it a factor in the buying decision.

People who think a "compact" shouldn't weigh 3500+ lbs, or who want a real engine in a car around 3200 lbs.

judging from BMW's ad campaigns and what owners are saying, its the people who have had E36s, E46's, or basically anyone looking for the purest, most practical luxury sports driving experience a German manufacturer can offer. A lot of these buyers are new to the brand, don't need the space of a 3/4, are coming from other fun cars, or are BMW owners already who want what is supposedly the most fun BMW now available.

Trust me, the new F30 is a lot less engaging to drive than the 2-Series, in any trim. Short wheelbase, compact as it gets, and the 4 cylinder runs mid-13's in the quarter (the I6 in 12.9) What isn't there to love?

Would it make more sense if I were to tell you that there is a super cheap 220i that we just don't get in the US? The 228i is more analogous to the 328i/428i which are 10k more expensive than the 228i. BMW just doesn't want to sell a sub-$30k car here. I'd have to look, but I'd bet that the 228i has more basic features than the 320i, which is basically a de-tuned lease stripper for people who just want a German luxury badge. I needed a bigger car, but had I not, I would have probably gotten the M235i over the 435i.

It's for the people who want a 4-Series but can't afford a 4-Series.
